No ATV's/UTV's over 50" in width, as USFS regulations do not allow them on sections of trail 16 due to a number of steep side-slopes. Experienced riders should have no problem with this as long as you crawl slowly over these areas. This is not a race; Just enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery and be careful.
8:45am: Riders meet at the Rest Area/Tourist Info Center off I-90 (Exit 61) in Wallace ID, and convoy to start of the ride.
The ride will proceed along good roads (USFS 456) to Moon Pass. Expect road dust on this first (about 5 mile) leg; Put a lot of space between ATV's to minimize dust. Riders will then travel the 985 to Slate Creek Saddle. We'll rest, then move "slowly" along trail 16 to Elsie Lake where the club will provide elk burgers and fixin's for lunch. Let Gary know if you'd prefer a cow-burger.
After lunch riders will travel westerly on USFS road 2354 (3 mile dusty section), then trail 111 to Kellogg Saddle. Riders then hit trail 16 again to loop back high above Elsie Lake, then return on trail 16 back to Slate Creek Saddle, then down an old logging road back to the 456, then one more 2 mile dusty stretch back to the vehicles.
4:30- 5:00pm: Return to trailhead.
The weather is expected to be warm/hot/sizzling, but we'll be at a high elevation which should help. Bring lots of liquids. Expect some dust at the beginning and end of the ride, but most of the day it should not be an issue.
For those interested, we may eat dinner after this ride at a Wallace or Kellogg restaurant. This will be an opportunity to cool down and talk about the ride before you drive home.
